Last Monday, YMT had the chance to interview Leighton Antelman, leader of the band Lydia. We discussed his last album Devil, the tour he is doing for it, his side project The Cinema and some other stuff! It was a real pleasure meeting this very nice and humble guy. Go on, play some music and enjoy your reading!
YMT: First things first, let us start with the tough questions, how is doing your laptop? We heard that you spilled beer on it; hopefully you didn’t lose any early and exclusive recordings?
Leighton: Hahaha, did you see that?!? I just turned it off for the night and the next day it worked, how lucky is that! I didn’t lose anything.
YMT: Great! You’ve been doing a tour since March 20 th, how has it been going so far? Was Devil perceived the way you expected? And is there any date you will particularly remember?
L: Yeah, we got off the road a month ago. It was a North American tour for Devil. The crowd’s and the fans’ reaction has been kind of incredible, I couldn’t be happier with it! I truly enjoyed playing in New Orleans, it is a fun time, there are always some wild nights there! New York city is also always cool and I really liked Chicago, it’s always one of my favorite cities. Only to name a few.
YMT: Next is Australia, can you tell us a bit more about it and about CARTEL, the band you are touring with?
L: We’re touring with a band called Cartel and we are kind of doing the major markets there. We will perform 5 or 6 shows, but I’m really excited! I love Australia, we’ve been there twice already and I have some really good friends there, all that makes me so excited to go back.
YMT: You seem to embrace change. Your albums are quite different from one another as if you don’t want to be where people are expecting you to be. Are you doing this on purpose?
L: I think it’s not something I set out to do, it just organically came about which I think is the best way to make a record. I don’t think you should try to force something that you don’t even like; I think a lot of teams do that, they set out to make a specific record, where I think they should make the songs and have the songs coming about in a more natural way.
YMT: We know that you are on a project with Matt called THE CINEMA; how is it going? (Matt Malpass is the former long-term producer of Lydia)
L: It’s good! It’s crazy but I’m in his house right now in Atlanta; he is actually passed out in the room, instead of working on songs! But yeah we are finishing that record right now. We already have like 7 songs done and we’re finishing the last 2 or 3; then I fly back to Arizona in two days. We are not sure about the release day yet, it’ll be sometimes in the next few months! It is really like a fun side project to get out other music that I can’t put with Lydia. I didn’t expect so many fans to really love it but it got a really good response; every show at least 10 to 20 people just beg me to have The Cinema do a tour as well, so we are trying to get that going on as well.
YMT: What’s next for Lydia?
L: We are doing quite a bit of touring this year, we just released the record. Oh! I forgot about this! I didn’t mention this yet but we are releasing a Deluxe version of Devil with 5 more songs that I’m recording with Colby as well right when I get back to Arizona!
(Colby Wedgeworth is the producer of Devil)
YMT: For the previous albums you asked some of your friends to do some paintings expressing what they feel while listening to your music. Devil’s cover does not seem to follow this approach; why?
L: Yeah, it is a big change from previous records. The previous was works of art but we went in another direction with the music so we wanted to do the same with the cover. We didn’t want to play it safe because everyone was expecting this kind of painting. We wanted to turn some heads and make people be like “What!?! What the hell is going on with this cover?”. I love it!
YMT: What is the worst thing that happenned to you while on stage?
L: Wow, that is a good question. I don’t know if I’ve been asked that before! I had quite a few actually but on the last tour, we played a show, somewhere in the Middle West, it was somebody’s birthday and I had a little bit too much to drink. I brought this girl on stage, that just had no idea what the lyrics were and I just gave her the microphone for the whole song!! It was pretty incredible, all my band was just laughing at me! Ok, it was a terrible idea!
YMT: I can imagine this! This interview is coming to an end and we would like to try out something new. You are the first person to try this out so sorry in advance!
YMT: If Lydia was a fruit, what would it be?
L: A pineapple!
YMT: If Lydia was a feeling?
L: Wow I don’t know, what do you guys got on this one?
YMT: I got one, I thought of Melancoly, particulary when I listened to The Exit. I don’t know why but that is what I felt!
L: A little depresssing but alright, hahaha! I would say Lydia is strange, a bit confused and hopeful! I don’t know…
YMT: I once met a pretty wise guy who told me that, if you want to find out why you are here on Earth, you can ask yourself: What would you do should you have all the money in the world? What about you Leighton?
L: I don’t wanna sound too boring or predictable, but I’m pretty sure I’d be doing what I’m doing right now. I‘m super happy. I always said that from the day I started the band, all I wanted to do is just be able to pay rent and buy food, as long as I can do that I’m cool!
YMT: I kinda expected you to say that! What do you think of YourMusicToday? And what do you have to say to your fans on YourMusicToday?
L: This looks awesome and about the love of music! I’m so glad that you guys love my music! Fans always blow my mind. Lydia’s fans are passionate, I can’t say enough about them. In every show, people are coming to me showing their new tattoos, how I changed their life, it is so incredible to me. I can’t say enough about Lydia’s fans!
YMT: It is your fault for making such great paintings! The one for Illuminate for instance.
L: It happens at least once every show; they come up and ask me to write something on their arms so they can get a tattoo. The funny part is that I have a terrible hand writing! Then they come back minutes later with their tattoo on their arms! I’m totally blown away.
YMT: Well, that’s it, thank you for being with us! Did you enjoy it?
L: Yeah guys, thank you for having me!
We also had the chance to ask him what are the titles he listens to the most lately. They will be part of the next submission sunday so stay tuned!
